Build around the pages people need

Start with a clear menu and useful collections. A collection for an actual shopping need gives customers a destination that is more useful than a separate page for every wording variation. Link important collections from the home page and relevant products from the collections.

Write a short introduction that explains what is in each collection, who it suits and how to choose. Avoid copying the same paragraph across many pages with only a keyword swapped.

Give important pages distinct titles and descriptions

Write a specific page title for each main collection, product and article. Put the main topic near the beginning, then add the brand where it helps. The visible heading and page copy should support that promise.

Meta descriptions are a chance to describe the page in search results, though Google may show different text. Use a natural summary instead of repeating a phrase. Shopify lets you edit search-engine listings for products, collections, pages and blog posts.

Answer buying questions in your own words

A useful guide can earn visits for an early-stage question. It should solve that question even if the visitor does not enquire today. Publishing many thin articles just to create URLs is unlikely to help readers.

  • Explain product differences, sizes, materials or specifications that affect the choice.
  • Be explicit about NZ delivery, pickup, warranty or service information where relevant.
  • Include original images and accurate alt text where images help the decision.
  • Link to related guides from relevant products and collections, and back to the products or service from the guide.

Check crawl and indexing basics

Make sure your public pages return a successful response, are linked from the site, and are not marked noindex. Shopify stores generate a sitemap at /sitemap.xml; a custom-built site needs to provide its own. Add the correct domain property in Google Search Console, submit the sitemap and inspect important URLs there.

A sitemap helps discovery, but submission does not guarantee indexing or rankings. Search Console can show whether Google has discovered, crawled and indexed a specific URL, and whether it sees a different canonical page.

Review the mobile experience

Use a phone to check navigation, text, image loading and the buying path. Search visibility is less valuable if visitors cannot find the right product or complete an order. Keep the most important information in regular page content, not hidden in an image of text.

Revisit search queries and landing pages monthly. Improve pages that already serve a clear intent before starting a new batch of articles. SEO is an ongoing publishing and usability practice, not a one-time switch.
